The poem “Sunne Rising” by John Donne contrasts with my poem theme below about the sun.

The sun is a steady, predictable force in life and love.

Let’s see what John Donne has to say about the sun.

The Sunne Rising

BY JOHN DONNE

Busy old fool, unruly sun,
               Why dost thou thus,
Through windows, and through curtains call on us?
Must to thy motions lovers’ seasons run?
               Saucy pedantic wretch, go chide
Late school boys and sour prentices,
Go tell court huntsmen that the king will ride,
Call country ants to harvest offices,
Love, all alike, no season knows nor clime,
Nor hours, days, months, which are the rags of time.

Thy beams, so reverend and strong
               Why shouldst thou think?
I could eclipse and cloud them with a wink,
But that I would not lose her sight so long;
If her eyes have not blinded thine,
Look, and tomorrow late, tell me,
Whether both th’ Indias of spice and mine
Be where thou leftst them, or lie here with me.
Ask for those kings whom thou saw’st yesterday,
And thou shalt hear, All here in one bed lay.

She’s all states, and all princes, I,
               Nothing else is.
Princes do but play us; compared to this,
All honor’s mimic, all wealth alchemy.
Thou, sun, art half as happy as we,
In that the world’s contracted thus.
Thine age asks ease, and since thy duties be
To warm the world, that’s done in warming us.
Shine here to us, and thou art everywhere;
This bed thy center is, these walls, thy sphere.

An opposing poem to the Sunne Rising

When I bask under the sun’s warmth, I remember how the love of my life warmed my soul.

The poem below about the sun says that despite how difficult life can be, we find a friend in the sun.

While it’s true sun can be an inconvenience, it’s also true that depression can be a result of staying in the shade too long.

Yes, being in the dark, quiet embrace of a lover’s arms can bid us to rest eternally.

But the sun calls us back into its warm shelter, especially when life treats us with chilly contempt.

Poem about the Sun

You protected me
Like no other
Through wind and rain
and stormy weather

You understood me
The sun
My warmth
Destiny
Riding
On waves
Balanced awakening
Shone through
The dark
Of deathbed’s taking

Nothing
Can stop
The stars from
Shining
Or bad habits
Dying
Love drew the
Pain up deep
Tossed me around
Stole my sleep

But you
Oh Sun
Of God
Made this earth
Worth the trod
Showed me home
Blessed the sod
And no one
Can shade the
Heat of embrace
Even when cold
Settles deep in place.

LoveLifeLinks.com hopes the sun shines on you today in remembrance of love.
