Love Letter

Finding a career passion isn’t easy for many people.  Below are two love letters that explain the dissonance that exists between our simultaneous desire for security and passion.

Finding your career passion

Dear Job,

Thank you for choosing me.

Thank you for providing me with a sense of security.

I’ve never really been sure which would come first, my 2-week notice, or getting fired.

But so far, we’ve managed to navigate the ups and downs, with the conclusion that some mutual benefit still exists.

For that, I’m forever grateful.

You chose me when I was young and just starting out.

I’ve grown. You’ve grown.

Yes, I’ve gotten jealous when you’ve brought younger, better looking, but not necessarily smarter employees on board.

I choose to hold onto the fact that we have a long history and I’m almost certain you’d never completely replace me.

XOXO,

Your Faithful Employee

p.s. I’ve had a passion on the side for a while, and at some point, I thought of quitting to pursue my passion fulltime, but my sense of loyalty, 401k, and ultimately fear, wouldn’t allow me to take the plunge.

Dear Passion,

Please know.

There were times I felt like there might be more, but I wasn’t ready to spend countless days, weeks, months, years alone, not certain of what might come next.

I never truly believed you existed outside of my imagination, so I decided I’d commit to a proven path.

Will you forgive me for being a coward?

For sticking to what I know?

For hoping to get fired instead of turning in my notice?

I mean, it wasn’t like I knew you existed all those years ago. I’d only read about following my passion in poems. I still read poems and please know–every time I do, I think of you—not my job.

Sincerely,

Your Lost Love

p.s. I love you and you make me feel like I want to live forever. I’m just worried that if I quit my job, you’ll turn out to be a figment of my imagination, a trap — that I will have lost what I’ve always known—a paycheck and a place to call home.
