This cat poem was written in memory of a friend’s cat who he’d seen grow from just a kitten. Animals are often more loyal to us than our human friends. This poem describes the homelessness we all feel inside. Yet, sometimes we’re met with a surprise, a litter of kittens out of which one catches our eye. Sometimes, others treat us like a stray. They assume that our cries point to something wrong with us, so they stay away. They’re afraid to get close.
But regardless of how we’ve been hurt, when we’ve felt lost, or the times our heart was homeless–our spirit is resilient. We have many lives and can bounce back from betrayal, heartache and loss. We will find a home again.
Sadly, my friend lost his cat to an incurable disease, and shortly after he also died from incurable brain cancer. We’ll all experience loss at some point in our life, but the joyful memories remain. Here is a tribute from my friend about his cherished and loyal companion, his cat.
2 nights back I saw my kitten in the dream. He begged me to let him in house and when I finally opened the door I woke up. The house and the garden were empty, only for me and him. This little kitten with rabbit legs and large ears was somewhat very dear to me, grew on my palms and I’d watch him jump in the night garden, hunting for the sparkling drops of water off the trees. I can’t forget this scene of life and he did it for me, with me. If I see him again I’ll stay there longer. As long as I can.
Cat Poem | Old Friend
Old
Boarded up shed
It appeared all was dead
But life rubbed up around the corner
Arched his back, skirted the dormer
And I just happened to live there
Too
He took his sweet time
Knew I’d arrive
Soon waited for me
In all the right places
Filling up spaces
Without any traces
Of disloyal love
But it was our cries
To confirm us alive
That others mistook
For a disease worth
To die
This seat next to me
Was all he could see
When I chose to bleed
He bandaged misery
We both happened to live there
Too.
Old friend
When will goodbyes
Stop taking me by surprise
Entangled in lies
And when will sadness
Cease to turn into madness
And reunite
Joy with these tears
Nothing but years
Nine they save lives
Old shed
Where they thought
My soul was boarded up
Dead
Let’s meet there again
Love just happened to live there
Too.
