Old Man Poem | Poem Background
In this poem, the old man in his wisdom, explains to the little girl that life is simple. He details how he’s climbed many mountains to reach that truth, and desires to save her the trouble of climbing, only yet to come back down. But, in the little girl’s innocence, she questions why life must end.
Life is simply simple
The old man calmly said
And slowly dozed away
Nodding down his head
Sitting at his feet
Pulling at his shirt
The little girl awoke him,
“But why do people hurt?”
Rustled from his sleep
The dream he dreamt so deep
He patted on her head
And bid her go to bed.
Life is simply simple
Now don’t forget this truth
I’ve climbed many mountains
To bring you down this news.
Live, and love, and eat
Look
Before you cross the street
Don’t admit to guilt
Or be cornered by defeat.
She grabbed him by the hand
Looked him in the eye
And tearful then replied
If life is simply simple,
“Why then must we die?”
Old Man Poetry | Conclusion
Sometimes we judge older people and forget about the wisdom they’ve collected over the years. Other times, we forget children and the wisdom inherent in their innocence. Once we disregard time as the only measure of wisdom or love, our eyes can be opened to the possibilities of just being. Are we able to live, love, and eat with joy–as an acceptance of all we’ve been given, whether painful insights or joyous circumstances? This old man sees the value in letting go of guilt and defeat.
LoveLifeLinks.com believes the wisdom of old age and youthful awareness can open one’s eyes to love.
Remember, you can feel love. Anywhere. Anytime. All the time.
