We’ve all heard the phrase “Face your fears.”
But what does that really mean?
To face your fears is to step through the portal of fear
We must do more than stand there looking our fear in the eyes.
We must step into the portal of fear, until we break through to the other side.
Fear cannot exist on the other side, because the other side will no longer be a mystery.
Most, if not all our fears can be traced to our fear of the unknown.
Stepping through the portal of fear means taking an action to make the unknown known.
Conquering fear can be accomplished one step at a time until you’re ready to take that final step into the unknown.
Maybe a pleasant surprise doesn’t await you on the other side.
But the chances are very high that your fear won’t be as scary as it seemed.
Demystify your fears
Once, I was given an exercise to write down all my fears about an impending situation in my life, going to work after I’d been a stay-at-home mom for years.
I did my best to write out every single fear in painful detail.
Four years later, I found that list of fears, and realized three things.
- First, all my fears had to do with not knowing what was on the other side.
- Second, all my “fears” actually played out.
- Third, I no longer had to fear those things again. I had pushed through. I not only faced my fears but also created an entirely new reality of the “Known.”
What fear are you afraid to face? How can this fear be described in terms of the unknown? What action can you take to make it to the other side of the unknown?
You’ll find that once you face your fears, including your fear of love–you’ll gain a sense of strength and confidence that can’t be shaken.

“Facing your fears robs them of their power” Mark Burnett
“There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.” John Lennon
“Each of us must confront our own fears, must come face to face with them. How we handle our fears will determine where we go with the rest of our lives. To experience adventure or to be limited by the fear of it.” Judy Blume
“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.” Dale Carnegie
